Friday Evening: Check-in and Unwind

With the ample historical homes in the area, Airbnb is a top choice for finding the perfect place to hang your hat for your staycation. While there are a number of fantastic options available, you just can’t beat the location of this cozy studio located right within the historical landmark Gibbard Block.

Friday evening, check-in and unpack, and head right downstairs to the Boiler Room. Located in the basement of Fox Burger, patrons can enjoy a cocktail and “smash” alongside the original boiler that’s been heating Gibbard Block since 1913. While the boiler itself is no longer in operation, this unique event space offers a quintessential Highlands experience and is a top choice for food and bevvies to start your weekend off right.

Afterwards, keep the party going with a bottle of your favourite from neighbouring Highlands Liquor or retire early to awaken bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for Day 1 of your staycation.

Saturday: Historic Streets and Local Eats

Start your day with a scenic walk or bike ride down Ada Boulevard, one of Edmonton’s most beautiful and historic streets stretching through Highlands and Virginia Park. Lined with stately heritage homes and offering jaw-dropping views of the river, this boulevard is a peaceful oasis perfect for snapping photos and taking in the architecture.

If you’re lucky, your stay might coincide with one of the Highlands Historical Society’s popular walking tours offering an in-depth look into the area’s rich history. If not, no worries—this area is perfect for solo exploration with countless corners waiting to be discovered. Be sure to include the Magrath Mansion on your route, the most noteworthy historical fixture on Ada Boulevard, built in 1912.

Once you've worked up an appetite, it’s time to explore the local flavours of 112th Avenue. Grab dinner at Bodega, the modern-day (and Spanish) equivalent to the neighbourhood watering hole, known for their tapas, vino, and sangria.

For a sweet treat afterward, head next door to Kind Ice Cream for a sampling of one of their artisanal scoops. We promise: the lineup is worth it!

Sunday: Nature, Parks, and Relaxation

Day 2 is all about soaking up the natural beauty of the communities. But first? Coffee. Start your morning at Mandolin Books and Coffee Company, flipping through your next favourite read while you caffeinate for the day head.

Next, head to Kinnaird Park and its adjacent ravine to explore its lush, forested trails and beautiful river valley views. Keep an eye out for colourful murals sprinkled throughout, part of a community arts project that started in 2015.

Spend the afternoon in Virginia Park’s Borden Park. Let the little ones roam free on the playground, enjoy a picnic under the canopied trees, browse the public art displays, or relax with your toes in the sand at the Borden Natural Swimming Pool, Canada’s first natural public pool.

Head home feeling rested and refreshed with a newfound appreciation for the charm and beauty of Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods.
