School’s out for the summer and somewhere between popsicle dyed tongues and lazy days in the sun, it’s almost inevitable that you could be hearing the “Mom, Dad I’m bored” mantra from your kiddos. We’ve put together some of our favourite ways to get the kids out, active and enjoying some family time this summer.

Take a Hike

We are so lucky here in Edmonton to have such a picturesque and expansive network of trails weaving in and out of the river valley and beyond. There are plenty of routes that are kid-approved, so lace up, slap on the sunscreen and wander away.

Backyard Movie Night

This is the kind of activity that childhood memories are made of. Simply string up a sheet, pop some kettle corn and gather all the extra blankets and pillows from around the house for an instant family movie movie night under the stars, right in your own backyard. If you don’t already have a projector, you can rent for the occasion or invest in a small portable unit like this. This is a great activity to turn into an annual family tradition.

Hit the Range

There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh cut grass, and the fun of whacking away at a bucket of balls for the afternoon. Victoria Golf Course and Driving Range even puts on a fun series camps for kids to introduce your littles to the sport - check them out here.

Summer Switch-Off

Finally, summer needs to be about enjoying family time and the outdoors as much as possible for the limited few months of great weather we do have. Enact screen-free time where the tablets and smartphones are left behind, in favour of some uninterrupted family fun.

Outdoor Crafts

From painted rocks to bird seed pine cones there are plenty of fun and simple DIYs to set up on the patio table this summer for the kids. If you’re looking for a little inspiration check out these great ideas. Happy crafting!

Whether you’re getting away to the mountains, taking in the festivals or setting up the sprinkler in your backyard, take time to enjoy each other and our beautiful city this summer!
