Smart, Stylish, and Accessible Design

With Canada’s aging population, the demographic landscape is undergoing a significant shift. By 2040, it’s projected that seniors aged 65 and older will make up nearly a quarter of the population, increasing the demand for homes designed with accessibility in mind.

Resale options can be limited, but as custom builders receive more requests for homes designed to age in place that’s beginning to change. Renovating an existing home is another option; however, integrating accessible features without compromising the overall look of the home requires strategic planning. Poorly planned modifications can feel like an afterthought, potentially impacting resale value. A custom build is often the more popular choice.

“It’s just the right thing to do.” A heartfelt dialogue with builder BeHaus and their commitment to community in Edmonton.

In an industry where success can sometimes seem synonymous with profits and bottom lines, there are those remarkable businesses that remind us that true success goes beyond financial gain. We recently chatted with Gerard Baert, the President and visionary behind BeHaus Builds Ltd. A home builder with a heart as big as the homes he creates, he left us with a feeling of inspiration and admiration that lingered long after our conversation.

In fact, you might expect Jon Hamm's whisky-drinking Mad Men character, Don Draper, to walk in any minute and mix himself a stiff old fashioned and light a cigar.

The black bartop is framed in with comfy bar stools where the Holland’s are sure to spend hours entertaining friends and clients. The back of the bar is mirrored with sleek glass shelves filled with some of Jason Holland’s favourite sippers.

The Edmonton real estate market has never been hotter. With so much inventory on the market how do you make your home stand-out from the rest?

Home staging is one of the tools Kerri-lyn and Jason Holland have come to rely on for making a great first impression with buyers.

“Home staging is extremely important in painting your home in the best possible light to prospective buyers, and it’s proven to sell a home faster and for a better price, says Kerri-lyn Holland with Holland and Associates. “It’s one of our proven strategies in selling a home. We want to ensure the home looks pristine and move-in-ready. We work with professional stagers and then get the home photographed, we take video, and we capture the home in all its staged glory so we can…

We acknowledge that we live and operate on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and travelling route to the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Métis, Dene and Nakota Sioux. We acknowledge all the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit whose footsteps have marked these lands for centuries.

In an effort to educate ourselves further on treaty agreements, we wanted to gain a better understanding of how our work, our industry and our community has been impacted by the current state of partnerships with local First Nations and what we can do as realtors, neighbours and allies to move the industry in a more open and progressive direction. We would like to thank all of the individuals who took time to share their stories and their…

Walking down a curved cement pathway, with the white gleaming form of the Walterdale bridge overhead, the Rossdale Power Plant emerges with it’s seven stacks jutting high into the air. It’s form is reminiscent of a 1930’s ocean liner ready to depart along the sparkling North Saskatchewan River. The plant is part of a series of public tours being hosted by Big E Tours.

According to our tour guide, with the exception of one event hosted as part of the Singularity U Summit in April of 2019, the tours are the first opportunity for the public to gain entry into the building in three decades.

“This power plant provided power not only to all of Edmonton, but also to surrounding communities and other parts of Alberta,” says David Johnston, the…
